Redwood City, CA, Friday, November 7, 2014- The World Wide Dance Party returns to the Club Fox in Redwood City with an exciting show to benefit East Palo Alto-based Live in Peace’s Youth Development Through Music Program.
The event will feature an all-star band playing the music of Sly & The Family Stone, Tower of Power, Headhunters, celebrating the Bay Area’s rich musical heritage while raising needed funds for a great community organization.
The event honors the global impact of music that arose from the Bay Area counter-culture and civil rights movement in the 1960s and 1970s, and invests in the future (100% of the proceeds are donated to Live in Peace). One of the major artists being celebrated is Sly and the Family Stone, the first major American band to have an integrated, multi-gender lineup. Before Sly very few soul and R&B groups delved into political and social commentary; after him, it became a tradition in soul, funk, and hip-hop.
Previous WWDP events in San Francisco and the Peninsula have been sold-out successes, this is a one time event that should not be missed.
- Legendary Rustee Allen is best known as the bass guitar player for the influential funk band Sly and the Family Stone, recording some of the most beloved bass lines of all time. He also was Bobby Womack's bassist until Womack passed away earlier this year.
- Fred Ross is a dynamic, talented vocalist and musician who has been performing professionally since he could walk. Fred has performed with top talent such as Tower of Power, Huey Lewis and the News, Pete Escovedo, Graham Central Station and Lionel Richie. Fred recently completed a US tour with the James Brown Horns featuring Pee Wee Ellis and Maceo Parker.
- The event visionary is Palo Alto native Will Magid. Will is an ethnomusicologist, trumpeter, DJ, and a seasoned producer who has worked with Solomon Burke, Erykah Badu, Pretty Lights, Bonobo, Zigaboo Modeliste, and more. "Trumpet prodigy Will Magid's World Wide Dance parties are a global blast," said the San Francisco Bay Guardian.
- Music historian, UC Berkeley Professor, and KPFA DJ Rickey Vincent will be DJing/MCing the event playing classic recordings and discussing connections between music and the political movements of the 1960s and 1970s.
